On May 8th, 2026. I interviewed Rishabh Sharma who is an Undergraduate researcher at University of Waterloo and is building AI/tech focused startup “ Tolaris Labs”. I asked about concerns surrounding the growing popularity of “vibe coding” and whether it may discourage students from pursuing computer science. Mr. Sharma stressed that coding will never become obsolete, even with rapid advancements in AI. Speaking from his experience as a Waterloo computer science student, he explained that AI-generated work alone will almost always be inferior to work guided by someone with strong technical knowledge and critical thinking skills. He emphasized that human understanding, creativity, and problem-solving remain essential in computer science, and encouraged students to view AI as a powerful tool that enhances learning and productivity rather than replaces programmers entirely.
