Meet Professor Chris M.Bell ( Schulich School of Business - York University)

August 23 2026

Interview Summary:

Professor Chris M. Bell provided academic interview focused on the core boundaries of trust in AI, the evolutionary characteristics of the AI ecosystem, and the value of trust. It first established that humans can only build cognitive-level trust in AI.

Current problems such as AI's logical inconsistency, black-box opacity, and the difficulty of tracing the origins of generated code pose major challenges to verifying reliability across the whole chain, and may even produce self-reinforcing standards detached from human reference points, gradually weakening human control.

Trust in the AI ecosystem has no absolute order of priority; trust among the core, powerful players is the foundation of stability across the chain, and different stages of development make different demands on trust: the early stage needs broad trust to support expansion, while the mature stage needs layered, relational trust to drive innovation.

The collaboration between the Japanese auto industry and its suppliers also shows that deep trust that goes beyond transactional relationships is the fundamental foundation for the long-term health of the AI ecosystem and for sparking innovation.
